Focus & Frames: Portraits & Still Life
Any Skill Level
Instructor: Rachel Boettcher
Tuesdays, 3/10-4/28/26
10am-12pm
This class invites homeschoolers to explore two powerful ways of telling stories with a camera: portraiture and still life. Through guided projects and creative prompts, students will learn how to photograph people, animals and themselves in ways that express personality, mood, and connection. We’ll explore lighting, composition, and perspective to help bring portraits to life while encouraging students to see their subjects with curiosity and care.
In the still life portion of the class, students will turn their attention to everyday objects- food, personal items, and found materials- and discover how arrangement, light, and detail can transform ordinary scenes into meaningful images. The class emphasizes creative exploration, self-expression, and peer learning in a supportive environment, helping young photographers build confidence while developing their own visual voice.
All equipment will be provided by In-Sight.
This class is open to ages 11-18.

Participants will be expected to take at least one photo per day throughout the duration of the class and will have the privilege of seeing the world through the eyes of their classmates.

In the darkroom, students will explore advanced printing techniques, including double exposure printing. A special session will be dedicated to making large 11x14” prints using materials from the studio’s “hit-or-miss” donation boxes—embracing chance and creativity in the process.
