Sky to Sea: Animal Photography Excursions

Join us for two wildlife photo adventures: a day photographing whales in the Atlantic Ocean, and a day in northern Vermont photographing rescued raptors and other big birds. We will take a trip to Gloucester, MA, to get close to the ocean’s largest mammals, and a day at the Vermont Institute for Natural History, to get the largest birds in our skies. Students will learn how to use digital cameras to make priceless photographs of these impressive animals.

All equipment will be provided by In-Sight.

This class is appropriate for intermediate students, and is open to ages 11-18.

 

Intro to Digital Photography

Beginner Level

Instructors: Hazel Wagner + Michael Zuhorski

July 1st- July 5th (no class on the 4th)

Want to take the next big step in learning photography? In this class we will learn how to use digital cameras and digital photo-editing software. Students in this class will take group photo walks around Brattleboro, make pictures based on creative prompts and exercises, and get the hang of using digital SLR cameras. This class is perfect for newcomers to photography, as well as those interested in taking the next step in knowing their way around a professional camera.

All equipment will be provided by In-Sight, and students will get to take cameras home to use on their own time.

This class is open to ages 11-18.

 

Mountains to Moss: Photographing Natural Environments with BEEC

Any Skill Level

Instructors: Michael Zuhorski + Kelsey (BEEC)

July 8th- July 12th

This class is for those interested in learning about and photographing the natural world. Each day, students will use cameras to explore notable natural environments in our region. For this class we are partnering with the Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center to give students in-depth experiences of mountaintops, winding rivers, rock-bound ponds, and more. We will take digital cameras to these places and use them to notice and photograph their intricate ecologies. This class will involve extensive hiking, environmental science, and a newfound sense of how photography can help us see the world in greater detail.

All equipment will be provided by In-Sight, and students will get to take cameras home to use on their own time.

This class is appropriate for intermediate students, and is open to ages 11-18.

 

Sk8 & Motion Photography

Any Skill Level

Instructors: Rachel Boettcher + Hazel Wagner

July 15th- july 19th

12- 4pm

Love skateboards and cameras? Spend a week learning skate photography and traveling to different skateparks around the region! Students will get to skateboard, learn tricks-of-the-trade for photographing motion, and experience the best parks in southeastern Vermont. This class is a partnership between In-Sight and the Boys and Girls Club of Brattleboro. 

 

Artist-in-Residence Program

Advanced Level (HS rising Juniors & Seniors)

Instructors: Michael Zuhorski + Laisa Bellomo-Johnson + Davida Carta

July 15th- July 26th

9am-3pm

This program is for young artists who want to take their work to the next level. For two weeks, participants will commit to working on their own creative projects with mentorship from notable local artists.
Residents have full access to In-Sight’s facilities and resources. At the end of the residency, students will exhibit their work at In-Sight’s Tiny Gallery. The following Friday, resident’s work will be widely seen at a reception during Brattleboro’s August Gallery Walk. Modeled after professional artist residencies, this is a chance for students to see what it’s like to make art full-time. Applicants must submit a concise portfolio of images, an artist statement, and a short statement of purpose. Instructors will introduce residents to the work of contemporary artists in line with their interests, grant technical advice, and help students into the next phase of their art making.

This class is open to Advanced photography students who are high school rising Juniors and Seniors.

 

Film + Alternative Process Photography

Any Skill Level

Instructors: Laisa Bellomo-Johnson + Willoughby Carlo

July 29th - August 2nd

9am-1pm

This class is for students interested in analog photography, from classic 35mm techniques, to unconventional activities like making prints on clothing, and using pinhole cameras. Students will learn the basics of darkroom photography, as well as an expanded sense of what photography can be.

All equipment will be provided by In-Sight.

This class is open to ages 11-18.

 

Night Photography

Any Skill Level

Instructors: Michael Zuhorski + Hazel Wagner

August 5th - August 9th

7pm-11pm

Learn how to photograph night-time landscapes, capture start-trails, and work with wild colors in this nocturnal class. Students will meet at dusk and take nightly adventures to interesting locations around Brattleboro. We will make long-exposure digital photographs that make night look as you’ve never seen it, and learn how the camera can bring bright colors out of dark places.

All equipment will be provided by In-Sight.

This class is open to ages 13-18.

 

Art as Political Expression

Intermediate (Ages 14-18) Prerequisite: Intro to Digital

*Warning: Heavy subject matter

Instructors: Fiona Bird + Michael Zuhorski

August 5th - August 9th

9am-1pm

In this class we will make pictures about social issues, and aspects of our world that students would like to see changes. We will learn how photography can be a powerful tool towards these changes. Students will encounter the work of artists who have affected change, and practice making digital photographs that work through political topics of students’ choosing. we will encounter environmental issues, gender equality, mental health, democracy, and other such topicsoften deemed heavy or difficult. Students will be given the means and the space to express these important things in the form of supportive discussion and creative prompts.

All equipment will be provided by In-Sight.

This class is open to ages 14-18.

 

Videography

Any Skill Level

Instructors: Ben Cowper + Michael Zuhorski

August 12th-August 23rd

9am-1pm

Make a short narrative film in this two-week intensive class. Students will work as a team to write, direct, edit, and act in their own movie, which will be premiered on Brattleboro Community TV. Students in their class will have opportunities to try out different roles in filmmaking, including cinematographer, writer, actor, editor, and sound designer. Class instructors will give significant guidance, but the result will be a story made totally by students.

All equipment will be provided by In-Sight.

This class is open to ages 14-18.


Classes are offered regardless of ability to pay, and no youth is ever turned away because of their family’s economic circumstances. Families are asked to pledge and pay what they can.
